Mission of Hope

West Point tradition of spinning the spurs.

West Point Traditions

West Point is a placed filled with traditions. Many of those traditions often go unnoticed and known mostly to those who have walked in the steps of the Long Gray Line. The tradition of spinning the spurs is one of these unique traditions. For those who had to perform this act as a final effort to survive the academic rigor, or for the more fortunate who just have an appreciation for these time honored traditions, this piece honors that tradition.Mission of Hope was created to capture this time honored tradition as a part of the unique and interesting aspects of the cadet life.

Inspiration and Dedication

As a cadet in my final year I was visiting a mentor's house. He had a large collection of West Point art pieces that I enjoyed viewing. While impressive, I noticed that none really captured the reality of cadet life and what made it a truly unique and memorable experience. This is what inspired me to creat Mission of Hope. I wanted to capture these moments that made our time there an unforgettable experience. Each print is dedicated to the memory of COL Kerry Pierce, Class of 1974.-David Shirley
